The next natural
geographic zone in the Chernivtsi oblast’ is Prut-Dniestr interfluve which is
spread along the picturesque banks of the Dniester river. It is spread through
the Zastavnivskyi, Khotynskyi, Kel’menetskyi and Sokyrianskyi raions.
Zastavnivshchyna is a real pearl of Bukovina. Landscapes of this raion favor
the development of the hiking and orienteering. Three rivers flow on the
territory of the raion: Savytsia, Chornyi Potik, and Dniester. The ones who come
here for the first time are impressed by the unique beauty of this land,
picturesque landscapes, numerous nature reserves, 160 ponds, everlasting
forests, Dniester canyons, water fields, multiple underground mineralized
springs and waterfalls, fabulous caves. Pictures of the primitive men were found
in some of these caves. There are also reserves with wonderful diversity of
flora, and some glades with dozens of kinds of plants and trees which are
included to the Red book of Ukraine and a lot of different things.
Khotynshchyna
is of the most attractive place in Bukovina that has harmoniously united
boundless plains and hills, forests and ponds thus creating incomparably
beautiful views. You can have good rest here, get a breath of fresh air, pick
mushrooms and flowers in the forest, go hunting and fishing. For the ones who
enjoy water trips on the Dniester there is a motor boat with 50 seats which can
be rented by tourists. Voyage along the right bank of the Dniester starts at the
village Ataky which is situated 2 km away from Khotyn. Magnificent view can be
already seen near the Rashkiv Mountain. There are caves in the mountains above
the Dniester, near the village Rashkiv. Visit Khotynshchyna and be sure to see
one of the Bukovinian wonders – Khotyn fortress which is more than 1000 years
old. Here you will feel a breath of the ancient times only by touching a stone
in its walls; you will inhale intoxicating air of the oak forest. Dniester waves
will carry you past the steep banks and hills of this unique land.
Kel’menechyna
strikes one with its unique natural formations, one of which is a wildlife
preserve “Babyn wall”. Peculiar natural complexes of big steeps and gentle
slopes were formed here for millions of years. Seeing the wonderful geological
open-cast mines of the Dniester canyon you can follow the geological history
which reaches the depths of the planet for 500 million years. There is a natural
landmark “Cone Mountains” in the northern part of the raion. This is a triple
broke-back chain of separate hills 15-20 m tall that was formed after the
natural destruction of the barrier reef of the warm Miocene sea. The highest
hills are situated between the villages Babyno, Hrushivtsi, Nahoriany and
Voronovysia. There are wonderful hunting and fishing spots in the raion. The
main kinds of hunting are hunting of the brown hare and wild fowl. The big
length of the Dniester reservoir allows to go fishing all year long. The main
kinds of fish are bream, crucian carp, European carp, sheat-fish, pike-perch.
Sokyrianshchyna attracts first of all with its beautiful sights, Dniester
steep banks, green woodlands, luxuriant spring blossoming and generosity of the
autumn gardens.
Excursions to the
villages near the Dniester and to the five bases of the sport and amateur
fishing can be done by bus, by a voyage down the flow of the Dniester watching
the picturesque landscapes or by walking with the backpack along the bank of the
river. There is a gigantic rock above the Dniester not far from Neporotov in the
Halitsia hole. The ruins of the mountain cloister which was founded between 11th
and 12th centuries were saved in its jut. Nowadays it is functioning
Sviatomykolaivskyi monastery. Such union with the surrounding nature is
breathtaking, tall Dniester cape that crowns all this strikes with its
singularity. The monuments of the Stone Age were found in the ancient caves of
the monastery.
During the last
years villages situated along the Dniester experience a real touristic boom.

Dniester canyon, hospitable people and fresh air, numerous fruit trees that grow
just along the road (sweet cherry, cherry, apricot, apples and pears, the
tastiest Bukovinian nuts), possibility to go fishing and pick ecologically clean
medical herbs favoured its rapid spa and touristic development.
