The
first attempt to create a museum on Bukovina was
made in 1863 by fans of antiquity. However, lack
of financial support and other circumstances led
to the termination of its activity. In 1877 the
museum collection was given to Chernivtsi
university. On the 14th of May, 1893 efforts of
the outstanding researcher-regional specialist
professor K. A. Romshtorfera were realized, when
he reached his goal of opening the regional
museum that operated till the beginning of World
War I. In May, 1887 the expansion of trade
relations of Bukovina with other provinces of
Austro-Hungary and foreign partners led to
creation, under the aegis of the Chamber of
Crafts and Trade, of a Museum of Crafts (later
the Industrial Museum). It was promoted actively
by regional president F. Fon Pino and the
burgomaster of Chernovtsy A. Kohanovsky.
Since June, 1899 in Chernivtsi was operated the
Museum of Church Art, later a museum of
Bukovinian metropoly, created thanks to the
efforts of professor E. Kazak.
In 1935 the Land Museum (since 1930 - Regional)
was united with the Industrial Museum and given
a new name – the Museum of King Karol II. In
1940, on the basis of the mentioned museums, the
Chernivtsi Museum of Regional Ethnography was
created in the former residence of Bukovinian
metropolitans. Since 1956 the museum has been in
premises located at 28 O. Kobylyanska Street.
Presently the Chernivtsi Museum of Regional
Ethnography has almost 90,000 museum pieces,
including a collection of old printed editions
that includes the unique Ostrozhsky Bible
printed by I. Fedorov in 1581, a collection of
over 3,000 unique coins, an interesting
collection of weapons, an archaeological
collection totaling over 12,000 items, others.
The pride of the museum is the collection of
fine art, arts and crafts based on icons of the
16th and 17th centuries, and works of
outstanding Bukovinian artists such as G.
Ivasjuk, J. Piguljak, E. Maksimovich, A.
Kohanovska. The natural science collection
totals almost 10,000 natural samples (a stuffed
animal, a herbarium, collections of
entomologists and so forth). Animals from the
Red Book of Ukraine, the European Red List and
the Red List of the International Union are also
presented in this collection.
The museum offers visitors restored of fragments
of recreated expositions, stationary exhibitions,
excursions and lecture services, and films. It
also exhibits mobile exhibitions at
establishments and organisations, helps with
creation of departmental, public and private
museums, and conducts research work (since 2002
the edition of a scientific year-book is renewed).
