The
Museum of History and Culture of Jew was opened
during the celebration of the 600th anniversary
of Chernivtsi, in October, 2008. The exposition
is in the former Jewish House located at 5
Theatre Square, (now the central city Palace of
Culture).
Founders:

Communities of Ukraine (Josif Zisels)

The museum exhibit covers the period from the
end of the 18th century to the middle of the
20th century. A significant amount of exhibits
are ancient books, documents, post cards,
religious and every day life objects. An
important place in the museum displays the
religious life of Bukovina Jews. The museum also
acquaints visitors with the Jewish cultural and
political movement at the end of the 19th and
the beginning of the 20th centuries, literary
practice in Bukovina, and also the everyday life
of Jews, their professions, hobbies and
spiritual needs.
Thematic sections of the exposition were
prepared by researchers from Chernivtsi National
University. Documents were donated by the
regional state archive in Chernivtsi, science
collaborators of the Jerusalem University (Israel),
Colombia University, the Holocaust Museum in
Washington DC, and the Institute of IVO in New
York (USA). The charity fund “Hesed Shushana”
and the centre “Or Avner” took part in the
creation of the museum, as well as known
regional specialists, collectors, and
representatives of the diaspora.
